FREDERICKSBURG DISTRICT: STAY ALERT FOR ICY ROAD CONDITIONS OVERNIGHT, SATURDAY MORNING
Motorists should plan to use additional caution if traveling as wet pavement may freeze overnight as temperatures drop, creating slick road conditions
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are mobilizing this evening to monitor for potential icing along Interstate 95 and primary roads in the Fredericksburg area, with temperatures expected to drop sharply overnight.
Following today's heavy rain, any wet pavement may freeze overnight and Saturday morning, leading to extremely slick and hazardous road conditions.
VDOT crews will apply salt to reduce the risk of icing, and sand to add traction for motorists. Crews will place additional emphasis on bridges, ramps and overpasses, which can freeze first due to lower pavement temperatures. However, even with treatment, icing remains possible.
Motorists urged to use caution if traveling. Although roads may appear clear, a thin layer of transparent ice may be present. Travelers are encouraged to consider delaying their trip until road conditions improve, or plan to allow extra travel time, reduce speed, and increase following distance between vehicles.
