FREDERICKSBURG DISTRICT: CREWS TO MONITOR, TREAT ROADS OVERNIGHT FOR POTENTIAL REFREEZE
Motorists advised to stay alert for possible icy patches with rain overnight in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will be circulating this evening and Monday morning to monitor for potentially icy road conditions on Interstate 95 and across the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.
Rain is forecast to fall overnight, and temperatures will fall below freezing. Crews will apply treatment materials to reduce icing and improve motorist traction as needed. Additional attention will be focused on bridges, ramps and overpasses, which often freeze first due to lower surface temperatures.
This evening, two state-maintained secondary roads remain closed following last week's winter storms, Route 664 (Granite Springs Road) in Spotsylvania County and Route 1208 (Hoomes Circle) in Caroline County.
While all other state-maintained roads are now open, residents and motorists will observe additional tree debris remaining in the state right of way, outside of travel lanes. Crews prioritized removing downed trees from the travel lanes to restore connectivity, and are currently organizing the follow-up effort to remove the remaining debris from roadsides.
If motorists spot a hazard in the road, do not attempt to move it. VDOT’s Customer Service Center is open 24 hours a day to answer questions and take reports of roadway hazards at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623) or online at https://my.vdot.virginia.gov.
VDOT Park & Ride commuter lots have been plowed, and will be treated ahead of the Monday morning commuter travel period.
Motorists are urged to use caution if traveling tonight and Monday morning:
Allow plenty of time to reach your destination
Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind the vehicle ahead of you
Brake very lightly to keep your tires from slipping on pavement
Do not pass vehicles applying treatment materials
