FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Lee McKnight has been named Saluda Residency Administrator for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in the Middle Peninsula region.

McKnight is leading highway maintenance and operations, land use, emergency response and snow removal for around 1,750 miles of state-maintained roads in the counties of Essex, Gloucester, King and Queen, King William, Mathews and Middlesex.

He oversees nearly 120 employees and a maintenance and operations budget of $10.5 million and serves as the primary local government liaison for all VDOT programs.

Before starting his current role, Knight was infrastructure manager for VDOT’s 14-county Fredericksburg District, and he previously was the Assistant Chesterfield Residency Administrator for the counties of Amelia, Chesterfield, and Powhatan between 2017 and 2021.

McKnight first joined VDOT in 2015 as a member of the agency’s Core Development Program for recent college graduates, where he had the opportunity to rotate through assignments in maintenance, operations and business, and at Saluda Residency. He also spent six months as the acting maintenance operations manager for the Northern Neck Residency, overseeing all field activities and maintenance crews.

“Lee brings extensive experience working with residents, businesses, and localities to find solutions that meet community transportation needs,” said Marcie Parker, P.E., VDOT Fredericksburg District Engineer.

“He has delivered on-time, on-budget maintenance projects in settings ranging from rural secondary routes to Interstate 95," Parker said. "I know he’s looking forward to serving the Middle Peninsula and providing outstanding service to travelers on all fronts, whether it is snow removal, emergency response in severe weather, or keeping our roads and bridges safe and well-maintained.”

McKnight holds bachelor’s degrees in civil engineering technology and psychology from Old Dominion University. He grew up in Mathews, Virginia, and is a graduate of Mathews High School.
