ROUTE 3 BUSINESS BRIDGE REPAIR IN STAFFORD COUNTY STARTS MONDAY, AUG. 23
Single westbound lane over CSX railroad will be closed weekdays for approximately five months, with all lanes open on weekends
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close the right westbound lane on Route 3 Business (Kings Highway) in Stafford County at the bridge over the CSX railroad for repairs on Monday, Aug. 23.
The bridge over CSX railroad tracks is located between Cool Springs Road and Chatham Heights Road.
Starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 23, crews will close the westbound lane for 24 hours a day on weekdays. The lane will reopen each Friday by 8 p.m. and all lanes will remain open on Saturdays and Sundays. This work zone and temporary traffic pattern is estimated to be in effect for approximately five months, through January 2022.
In close coordination with CSX, crews will close and reopen the Route 3 westbound lane each week to safely repair the bridge’s beam ends.
Scheduling these repairs to bridge beam ends will extend the life of the structure and ensure it remains unposted to carry vehicle traffic of all legal weights.
The nearly $2 million project will improve the bridge’s condition and remove its structurally deficient status. Structurally deficient does not mean a bridge is unsafe for travel, but it is an indicator that a bridge needs maintenance or repair work to improve its condition.
The long-term lane closure will expedite repairs and minimize the impact to traffic on the weekends.
Message boards will be posted today, Aug. 13, to alert drivers to the work zone.
