NEW BRIDGE OPENS ON CLIFTON ROAD IN CAROLINE COUNTY
The new structure allows heavier vehicles to cross the bridge over the South River
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) recently completed construction of a new bridge on Route 743 (Clifton Road) over South River in Caroline County.
The new concrete bridge can be crossed by vehicles of all legal weights. The previous bridge, built in 1949, was structurally deficient, and was posted with a 10-ton vehicle weight limit.
Construction began in December 2020.
The $1.9 million project was funded by Virginia’s State of Good Repair program, which seeks to rehabilitate and replace deficient bridges and pavement. The project was completed earlier this month, on-time and on-budget.
The new bridge was built next to the previous bridge, which allowed the road to remain open to traffic during construction.
The project contractor was Burleigh Construction, Inc.
