VDOT News - Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will continue to monitor road conditions overnight and this weekend with around a dozen state-maintained roads closed this afternoon for flooding in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.

While rain and high winds have subsided, travelers are urged to proceed with caution overnight and tomorrow in coastal and low-lying areas, where flooding remains a risk, especially at high tide.

Route 17 southbound is closed in Essex County at the Mount Landing Creek bridge. Northbound and southbound traffic are currently crossing the creek using the northbound lanes, with one travel lane in each direction. VDOT Area Headquarters crews continue to assist with traffic control at the scene.

In the Northern Neck, several secondary roads are closed or have travel lanes partially covered by water in Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, and Westmoreland counties.

In the Fredericksburg area, Harrell Road and River Road are closed for flooding in Stafford County, with high water advisories posted on Brooke Road and Raven Road.

Crews will continue to post road closed signs and barriers, and high water advisory signs, as needed, as well as remove downed trees, debris, and other hazards.

What Travelers Should Know

511Virginia will report state-maintained roads that are partially or completely blocked due to flooding, debris, downed utility lines or other safety hazards.

• Never drive across a flooded roadway. The underlying road or bridge may be damaged or completely washed away beneath flood waters, and a few inches of water can sweep vehicles downstream. Turn around, don’t drown!
• Do not try to move or drive around a barricade.
• Avoid flood-prone areas, especially along creeks and other low-lying areas.
• If you come across a downed power line, do not try to move it. Contact your local authorities.
• Be alert for tree limbs and other debris in the roadway. Even small branches and other debris can damage a car or cause the driver to lose control.
• Keep headlights on while it’s raining: it’s the law.
• Report downed trees, flooding, or other roadway hazards to VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623) or online at https://my.vdot.virginia.gov.
