FREDERICKSBURG DISTRICT: CREWS MAKE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS TODAY, BUT STAY ALERT FOR REFREEZE OVERNIGHT
Roads may become hazardous when temperatures plummet overnight, with wet pavement potentially turning icy; Travelers should plan to use caution

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews made significant progress today plowing and treating secondary roads and neighborhoods streets across the 14-county Fredericksburg District.

Interstate 95, primary and high-volume secondary routes are clear throughout the district, but any wet pavement caused by melting ice and slush may refreeze tonight. Drivers should be alert to the potential for patches of slick pavement.

Conditions on most secondary routes and neighborhood streets are in minor condition, which means there may be isolated spots of snow, ice or slush. In Spotsylvania County, crews are continuing to work this evening to plow and improve conditions on remaining secondary routes in moderate condition, with partial snow or slush coverage.

VDOT crews are demobilizing from 24-hour emergency operations this evening. However, crews will report overnight at Area Headquarters locations to monitor roads for refreezing and apply treatment materials for any hazardous road conditions.

The Merry Point Ferry in Lancaster County and the Sunnybank Ferry in Northumberland County will resume normal operations on Saturday, Feb. 20.

For the next several days, drivers should:

  • Use caution when traveling overnight and during the early morning hours
  • Plan to allow extra travel time
  • Reduce your vehicle speed when conditions warrant
  • Check real-time road conditions in Virginia at 511Virginia
  • Report any road hazards to the 24-hour VDOT Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623).
