FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is urging drivers to avoid travel today with freezing rain causing hazardous driving conditions across the Fredericksburg District.

The freezing rain is causing icy road conditions, downed trees and utility lines.

There is no safe way to drive on ice, it doesn’t matter the type of vehicle. Freezing rain causes ice to form on the pavement making travel hazardous.

VDOT crews and contractors continue to make passes to apply sand and salt on roads carrying the heaviest traffic, like Interstate 95 or Route 1, and roads leading to public safety facilities that need to operate 24 hours a day, such as hospitals and emergency responders.

“The agency’s mission is to keep Virginia moving. VDOT crews train year-round to navigate and respond to hazards, such as downed trees or power lines. It’s safer for our operators to carry out our mission with less traffic on the road. We’re asking for the public’s help to stay off the roads and to stay safe by staying home,” said Robbie Prezioso, P.E., VDOT Fredericksburg District Maintenance Engineer.

VDOT crews will remain in emergency operations until all state maintained roads are safe for travel.
