JUNE 3, 2020 UPDATE: The project completion date has been extended from May 2020 to July 31, 2020.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – In February 2020, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) bridge maintenance crew will begin work to replace the Route 619 (Owens Mill Road) bridge over Rickenaw Creek in King and Queen County.

On Monday, Feb. 10, VDOT will close a portion of Route 619 (Owens Mill Road) to traffic while crews replace the existing timber deck bridge. The new structure will include a concrete deck as well as new concrete abutments and piles.

At the completion of the project, crews will pave the bridge approaches and add new bridge markers on the structure.

The existing bridge, constructed in 1967, is structurally deficient.

During construction, detour signs will direct drivers to use the following routes around the road closure:

• Route 619 (Owens Mill Road)
• Route 623 (Indian Neck Road)
• Route 640 (Lyneville Road)
• Route 721 (Newtown Road)
• Route 660 (Sorghum Road)

Drivers should expect an approximate 10-mile detour around the closure.  

The bridge replacement project is expected to be complete in an estimated 14 weeks, and the road will reopen to traffic in May 2020, weather permitting.

According to the most recent VDOT traffic data, approximately 264 vehicles a day use this section of Route 619 (Owens Mill Road).
