VDOT News - Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has scheduled road resurfacing improvements for several secondary roads in the Town of West Point.

All work will be completed during 2020. Preliminary activities to prepare the underlying road surface will begin on Thursday, April 23, weather permitting.

Drivers may encounter mobile lane closures between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Most work will occur on weekdays, but periodic weekend work may occur. Crews will be patching the road surface.

Beginning tomorrow, crews are scheduled to work on Route 1120 (23^rd Street).

Future Resurfacing Work

The following secondary routes are scheduled receive resurfacing improvements this year in West Point:

• Route 1101 North (Lee Street)
• Route 1113 East (17^th Street)
• Route 1114 East (18^th Street)
• Route 1115 East (19^th Street)
• Route 1116 East (21^st Street)
• Route 1118 East (16^th Street)
• Route 1119 East (20^th Street)
• Route 1120 East (23^rd Street)
• Route 1122 East (15^th Street)
• Route 1125 East (22^nd Street)
• Route 1127 North (F Street)

These secondary routes in West Point are designated for a multi-phase resurfacing treatment that includes a cape seal overlay.

Cape seal is designed to improve the condition of the road, extend the life of the pavement and prevent further deterioration. When complete, the road surface will have a uniform color and appearance that will cover previous pothole repairs and cracking. Motorists will have a skid-resistant travel surface.

What Residents Can Expect

This work will be completed in two phases, occurring approximately two weeks apart, weather permitting. After the first phase of cape seal work is complete, crews will return approximately two weeks later to sweep any remaining sand and gravel from streets that has not dissipated from wind and vehicle traffic. After the roads have been cleared of sand and gravel, a final travel surface will be applied.

Message boards will be posted in advance of this work once crews begin to schedule cape seal application work.

Shortly before work begins, residents will also receive a letter with additional information on the cape seal application process. “No Parking” signs will be posted on streets where crews will be working during the upcoming week. We ask residents to please park any vehicles off the street during these brief periods, so workers can complete the project as quickly as possible and cover the entire road surface.

Updated work schedules will be shared weekly in news releases, which will be posted on www.VirginiaDOT.org and shared through VDOT’s Fredericksburg District Twitter account and Fredericksburg District Facebook page.

 It will also be included in the weekly lane closure list, Hot Spots, which is posted on Friday afternoons to VDOT’s Travel Center page.
