OVERNIGHT ROUTE 17 SOUTHBOUND, I-95 RAMP STOPS IN STAFFORD NEXT WEEK
Intermittent full traffic stops are scheduled for Route 17 southbound between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. nightly starting Monday, Feb. 24 through Friday, Feb. 28, to allow crews to install bridge beams for new I-95 overpass

UPDATE: The full traffic stops on Route 17 scheduled for Monday, Feb. 24 into Tuesday, Feb. 25 at I-95 in Stafford County have been canceled with the high chance of inclement weather.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. Route 17 southbound travelers can expect delays near Interstate 95 in Stafford County on the evenings of Monday, Feb. 24 through Friday, Feb. 28 as crews lift bridge beams into place for a new I-95 overpass as part of the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project.

Intermittent, full traffic stops and lane closures are scheduled for Route 17 southbound to allow crews to safely move the beams into place over the travel lanes. Traffic may be stopped for up to 30 minutes at a time. In between each stop, congestion will be allowed to clear before the next full stop.

Also, Route 17 southbound traffic will not be able to enter I-95 northbound from the Exit 133A (Falmouth) ramp, and I-95 southbound traffic will not be permitted to exit to Route 17 southbound toward Falmouth. All other interstate ramps at Exit 133 will remain open.

View an online map of the work zone and traffic stop locations.

Virginia State Police will assist with traffic control in the work zone.

Message boards are posted to alert Route 17 southbound travelers to the upcoming lane closures and intermittent full stops, and the I-95 ramp stops.

Project Background

Construction to build the $132 million I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing began in August 2018 and will be underway through May 2022.

The project seeks to reduce I-95 congestion in the Fredericksburg area by providing local traffic with additional lanes to travel between the Route 17 and Route 3 interchanges without merging into the interstate’s general purpose lanes.

The Rappahannock River Crossing project will build three new general purpose lanes for I-95 southbound stretching six miles in the current median of I-95. The new lanes will begin in the vicinity of Truslow Road, just north of Exit 133 at Route 17 in Stafford County. The new lanes will end 1.2 miles south of Exit 130 at Route 3 in Fredericksburg, in Spotsylvania County.

The three existing I-95 southbound lanes will be converted to carry those traveling to the Route 17 and Route 3 interchanges, as well as the Safety Rest Area and Virginia Welcome Center.
