VDOT News - Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are applying another round of treatment materials to Interstate 95, primary roads and higher-volume secondary roads in the Fredericksburg area early this morning to add traction for motorists, who are advised that icy patches may be present even on roads that appear clear.

I-95, primary roads and secondary roads carrying heavier traffic are clear this morning in Caroline, Stafford and Spotsylvania counties, with bare pavement and visible travel lanes. Subdivision streets and lower-volume secondary roads in Stafford and Spotsylvania are in minor condition, with isolated patches of snow, slush and ice.

VDOT Park & Ride lots are clear, and have been treated ahead of the morning commute.

However, even on treated travel surfaces, motorists are advised that slick conditions may still exist until temperatures rise above freezing.

VDOT crews will remain mobilized in emergency response and continue to circulate to address icing and any hazardous road conditions. Crews will stay mobilized, working 24 hours a day, in 12-hour shifts, until all state-maintained roads are safe for travel.

What Motorists Should Know

• Plan to adjust travel as needed based on conditions

• Even on bare pavement, black ice may be present. Ice may appear as a transparent glaze on the pavement and may be invisible to motorists

• Residents are encouraged to consider that if their driveway or sidewalk is too icy or slick for walking, road conditions may also be slippery

• Check 511Virginia.org for real-time road conditions before starting a trip

• Plan to allow extra travel time, reduce your speed, wear your seat belt, and increase following distance between vehicles

• Use additional caution while traveling on bridges, ramps and overpasses, which freeze first due to lower surface temperatures, as well as on roads carrying lighter traffic volumes
