VDOT News - Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews in the Fredericksburg District remain mobilized in emergency operations to remove debris from state-maintained roads blocked by damage from Tropical Storm Isaias.

Most roads remain closed for downed trees that are entangled with utility lines. VDOT crews and utility partners are working together to de-energize lines first, which then allows maintenance crews to clear tree debris from the travel lanes.

All primary roads are open in Fredericksburg District, but a total of around 25 secondary roads are closed across the district. Roads are closed in Essex, Caroline, Gloucester, King George, King and Queen, King William, Lancaster, Middlesex, Northumberland, Stafford and Westmoreland counties.

Additional secondary roads are passable with caution, with travel lanes partially covered with standing water.

Travelers should check 511Virginia and the Road Conditions Table for a real-time list of road closures and lane closures, which will be updated as hazards are cleared.

Today, VDOT crews are working first to reopen travel lanes and restore access for motorists. Crews will return to perform additional cleanup of storm debris along roadsides throughout the week.

What Travelers and Residents Should Know:

• Continue to report downed trees, tree debris, flooding, or other roadway hazards to VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623) or vdot.virginia.gov.

• If you come across a downed power line, do not try to move it. Remain at a distance and contact your local authorities.

• Be alert for tree limbs and other debris in the roadway. Even small branches and debris can damage a car or cause the driver to lose control.

• If you encounter a traffic signal without power, treat the intersection as a four-way stop. If a traffic signal is flashing red, come to a complete stop, and then proceed when safe. If a traffic signal is flashing yellow, proceed with caution.

Ferry Service

Service on the Merry Point Ferry in Lancaster County and Sunnybank Ferry in Northumberland remains suspended until further notice. Ferry travelers can check 511Virginia for real-time service updates.
