FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Construction of a new left turn lane on Route 1 southbound at Route 761 (Potomac Creek Drive) in Stafford County is underway.

The $1.8 million SMART SCALE project will build a left turn lane on Route 1 southbound at Potomac Creek Drive near the industrial park entrance. The project will also include minor improvements to Route 1 which will include pavement treatment and re-striping.

Utility relocation work began near the project site earlier this year and is now complete.

This week, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Tavares Concrete Company, Inc., of Lorton are installing signs and mobilizing construction equipment in the work zone.

Beginning Monday, Sept. 16, drivers on Route 1 southbound at Potomac Creek Drive can expect a single lane closure in the work zone each day, Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Friday, 7 a.m. – noon.

VDOT will monitor traffic conditions on I-95 southbound and Route 1 southbound and lift lane closures in the work zone in the event of an incident on I-95 or if drivers are experiencing major delays on Route 1 southbound near the work zone.

Stafford County submitted an application to build this project through Virginia’s SMART SCALE transportation funding program.

This project is designed to create a safer turning environment for motorists entering Potomac Creek Drive from Route 1 southbound.

Potomac Creek Drive is located off of Route 1 between American Legion Road and Enon Road in Stafford County.
