FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Travelers can expect daytime delays next week on Route 206 (Dahlgren Road) between Route 3 and Route 301 in King George County for a combined paving and safety project.

Route 206 will be reduced to a single lane at the following dates, times and location:

Between Route 301 and Route 3

Tuesday, Sept. 3 – Friday, Sept. 6

• 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 7

• 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Crews will direct one-way, alternating traffic through the work zone. Motorists should expect slow-moving construction equipment and delays near the mobile work zone.

To address congestion on Route 206 westbound during the peak afternoon travel period in the Dahlgren area, traffic signal timing has been adjusted at the Route 206 and Route 301 intersection to provide additional green time for Route 206 westbound traffic. Virginia State Police are assisting with traffic control at intersections in this area as needed.

Work to mill, pave, slightly widen road shoulders, and add centerline rumble strips and fresh shoulder stone along a 9-mile section of Route 206 is nearing completion. Approximately 2 additional weeks of work are anticipated on Route 206 before crews move to the next project location, weather permitting.

Project Background

A combined safety and paving project in King George began on Wednesday, July 10 to deliver a smoother travel surface on several high-volume roads, and reduce the risk of crashes at spot locations by adding centerline rumble strips and widening the road shoulders.

Throughout the project, work is scheduled to occur on Route 3, Route 206 (Dahlgren Road), Route 218 (Caledon Road), Route 614 (Potomac Drive), Route 624 (Owens Drive) and Route 1150 (Commerce Drive). Lee Hy Paving Corp. is the contactor for this project, which has an estimated total cost of $5 million.

Crews are working along one route at a time. This ensures that alternate primary routes will remain open to drivers who wish to avoid the work zone.

Message boards are being posted in advance to notify motorists of the work locations, dates and times. Boards will be moved as crews progress from one route to the next.

Updated work schedules will be shared weekly in news releases, which will be posted on www.VirginiaDOT.org and shared through VDOT’s Fredericksburg District Twitter account and Fredericksburg District Facebook page.

It will also be included in the weekly lane closure list, Hot Spots, which is posted on Friday afternoons to VDOT’s Travel Center page.
