ROUTE 646 (FORK BRIDGE ROAD) IN CAROLINE COUNTY WILL CLOSE NEXT WEEK FOR BRIDGE REPLACEMENT PROJECT
Fork Bridge Rd. over Maracossic Creek will be closed to through traffic starting Tuesday, Sept. 3
FREDERICKSBURG – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will soon begin work to replace a structurally deficient bridge over Maracossic Creek on Route 646 (Fork Bridge Road) in Caroline County.
VDOT will close Fork Bridge Road near the bridge at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 3. The bridge is located between Mattaponi Trail and Sorrell Lane.
A detour will be in place for approximately 14 weeks, weather permitting, while construction is underway.
Signs will be posted along the recommended detour route, which is approximately seven miles:
- Route 627 (Roundabouts Road/Mattaponi Trail)
- Route 721 (Newtown Road)
Message boards will be posted this week to alert drivers to the upcoming bridge work and detour.
Crews will replace the existing steel beam and timber deck with a 55-foot long concrete single slab bridge on new concrete abutments.
Built in 1967, the existing bridge is a 41-foot long steel beam structure. It currently has a weight restriction of 3 tons for all vehicle types.
The current weight limit posting is expected to be removed following this project.
Fork Bridge Road carries an average of 20 vehicles a day, according to a 2018 VDOT traffic count.
