FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Route 201 (Courthouse Road) in Northumberland County reopened to traffic today, as construction to rebuild the road following damage from Tropical Storm Michael is complete.

Courthouse Road was closed to through traffic for motorist safety on Oct. 12, 2018 after stormwater washed away a portion of the road over Bush Mill Stream, and damaged a set of four 96-inch drainage pipes.

The Virginia Department of Transportation and its contractor, Abernathy Construction Corp., replaced the damaged drainage pipes with a triple set of concrete box culverts. Each culvert measures 12 feet by 10 feet. Due to their size, the replacement culverts were specially fabricated to fit the site dimensions, and were lifted into place by crane.

The new culverts arrived on site in early March, and crews spent this spring moving them into position, rebuilding the road foundation, and paving the new travel surface. Fresh pavement markings have been painted along the road, and new guardrail was installed.

Courthouse Road carries an average of 1,600 vehicles a day.

Additional Emergency Road Repair Updates

Three state-maintained roads in Fredericksburg District are closed to through traffic for repairs connected with Tropical Storm Michael damage:

Northumberland County

• Route 634 (Spring Road): Anticipated to reopen in July 2019. Crews are repairing the bridge and replacing a washed out section of road.

King William County

• Route 632 (Mt. Olive Cohoke Road): Anticipated to reopen in July 2019. The road closed at Acquinton Creek in May 2019 to allow crews to repair a drainage culvert damaged during Tropical Storm Michael.

• Route 662 (Sharon Road): Anticipated to reopen in August 2019. Crews are reconstructing a slope near the road and repairing the culvert.
