RAIN POSTPONES ROAD WORK ON I-95 NEAR FREDERICKSBURG
Full stoppages on Route 17 in Stafford also postponed tonight, double lane and ramp closures on I-95 for paving will start tomorrow night, June 11

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is postponing some overnight road work scheduled for tonight, June 10, on Interstate 95 in the Fredericksburg area and Route 17 in Stafford County due to the forecasted inclement weather.

Starting tomorrow night, travelers should anticipate overnight delays with double lane and ramp closures on I-95 for paving, as well as, full stoppages on Route 17 for the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project.

Weather permitting, the following lane closures are scheduled: 

I-95 Southbound

Exit 133 (Route 17/Falmouth) Double Lane Closures

  • Monday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m. 
    • single lane closure 
  • Tuesday Friday, 9 p.m. – 10 a.m.
    • 9 p.m. – single lane closure
    • 10 p.m. – double lane closure
    • 4 a.m. – 10 a.m. – single lane closure except on Friday, June 14 when all lanes will reopen by 6 a.m.

The double lane closures are needed to allow crews to lift beams for the new I-95 overpasses spanning Route 17 as part of the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project.

I-95 Southbound Exit Ramp at Exit 133A/Falmouth 

  • Tuesday Friday, 11 p.m. – 4 a.m.
    • Intermittent exit ramp closures up to 30 minutes during the bridge beam lifts. Travelers should use Exit 136/Centreport Parkway or Exit 130/Route 3 as alternate exit during closures. 

Exit 136 (Centreport Parkway) in Stafford to Exit 130 (Route 3) in Fredericksburg

  • Friday Saturday, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m.
    • Expect a single lane closure starting south of the Exit 136/Centreport Parkway interchange at mile marker 135 to Exit 130/Route 3 in Fredericksburg. 

I-95 Northbound 

Exit 126 (Route 1/Massaponax) Double Lane Closures and Exit 126B Ramp Closure 

  • Tuesday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.  
  • 9 p.m. – single lane closure
  • 10 p.m. – double lane closure for milling and paving. I-95 northbound off-ramp to Route 1 southbound will also be closed.
  • 4:30 a.m. – All lanes and the exit ramp reopen 

Message boards will be posted prior to Exit 118/Thornburg to notify travelers; Exit ramp to Route 1 northbound at Exit 126A will remain open during this work zone. Drivers may encounter a temporary rough driving surface. 

Exit 133 (Route 17/Falmouth) 

  • Friday – Saturday, 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. 
  • Expect a single lane closure on I-95 northbound near the Rappahannock River bridge and the Exit 133 interchange for work as part of the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project. 

Route 17 Southbound near I-95 Interchange 

FULL TRAFFIC STOPS

  • Tuesday and Thursday, 8 p.m. – 7 a.m
  • 8 p.m. – single lane closure
  • 11 p.m. – 4 a.m. Intermittent full traffic stops up to 30 minutes at a time. All Route 17 traffic will be stopped as crews lift and install bridge beams for the new I-95 overpasses. Congestion will be cleared in between each beam placement.
  • 4 a.m. – 7 a.m. single lane closure

Route 17 travelers can use the most convenient alternate route, depending on their destination.

I-95 travelers are advised to use Route 1 to avoid delays.

Message boards will provide advance notice of the lane closures and possible delays.

Virginia State Police will assist with traffic control in the work zones.
