NEW TRAFFIC PATTERN STARTS AUG. 1 ON 12th STREET IN KING GEORGE COUNTY
Through traffic will be prohibited on 12th Street between Rosedale Avenue and Gate A at Naval Support Activity South Potomac at Dahlgren
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – A new traffic pattern will be installed on 12th Street at Route 206 (Dahlgren Road) in King George County, which is near Gate A at the Naval Support Activity South Potomac (NSASP) at Dahlgren.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will install signs and barriers to prohibit through traffic on 12th Street between Rosedale Avenue and Dahlgren Road. View an online map of the change here.
The new traffic pattern will go into effect on Thursday, Aug. 1.
Starting next month, eastbound traffic from 12th Street onto Dahlgren Road will be prohibited at all times. A barrier will be installed on 12th Street to prevent this movement. Additionally, signs will be installed at the 12th Street and Rosedale Avenue intersection to warn drivers that Dahlgren Road is not accessible from eastbound 12th Street.
Motorists will also be prohibited from turning left from Dahlgren Road onto 12th Street between 3 – 6 p.m. on weekdays.
Weather permitting, VDOT will install the new signs and barrier on Wednesday, July 31.
Message boards will be posted to alert motorists to this upcoming change.
The new traffic pattern seeks to reduce congestion and enhance security the base gate. In November 2018, VDOT re-striped the center lane of Dahlgren Road between Gate A and just east of the traffic signal at Route 614 (Potomac Drive). This allowed the center lane to serve as an eastbound-only travel lane, and has doubled the number of lanes entering the naval base at Gate A during peak arrival times on weekdays.
Dahlgren Road carries an approximately 13,000 vehicles a day, according to a 2018 VDOT traffic count.
