VDOT News - Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – On Monday, April 15, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will install new speed limit signs on a portion of Route 17 in Gloucester County raising the speed limit to 60 mph.

The speed limit will be increased from 55 mph to 60 mph on a 4.6 mile section of Route 17 from the Middlesex/Gloucester County line to 0.78 of a mile north of Route 616 in Gloucester County.

Drivers should be alert to crews installing the new speed limit signs along the shoulder on Route 17 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.  All travel lanes will remain open in the work zone.

In the event of inclement weather, the sign installation will take place on Tuesday, April 16.

Background

The Virginia Department of Transportation conducted a study of this segment of Route 17 following legislation passed by the Virginia General Assembly in 2018. Following VDOT’s review, this section of Route 17 was recommended to have its speed limit increased to 60 mph. The Gloucester Board of Supervisors recently passed a resolution endorsing the increased speed limit at this location.
