NEW I-95 NORTHBOUND ON-RAMP OPENS AT EXIT 118 IN THORNBURG NEXT WEEK
Drivers will experience a temporary traffic pattern to enter I-95 northbound at Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) in Spotsylvania County starting Wednesday, May 1

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Traffic entering Interstate 95 northbound at Exit 118 (Thornburg) in Spotsylvania County will be shifted to a new on-ramp starting Wednesday, May 1 after the morning rush hour.

Drivers will also experience a temporary traffic pattern to enter I-95 northbound from Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) with the ramp opening.

View an online map of the new on-ramp and temporary traffic pattern in the work zone.

Starting Wednesday, May 1, after the morning rush hour, eastbound Mudd Tavern Road traffic will have a dedicated right turn lane to go under the bridge to enter I-95 northbound in an off-set diamond interchange. Westbound Mudd Tavern Road traffic will turn left onto Mallard Road and go under the bridge to merge onto I-95 northbound.

A new traffic signal to control traffic entering I-95 northbound at the Mallard Road, Mudd Tavern Road and Dominion Raceway Avenue intersection will be activated in spring 2019, when construction is closer to completion.

Travelers will not see any changes to the I-95 southbound on- and off-ramps at Exit 118 at this time.

When the $22.4 million project is complete, three new traffic signals will be in full operation to control traffic entering and exiting I-95.

The first traffic signal is already activated and controlling ramp traffic exiting I-95 northbound and Mallard Road. The second traffic signal will control traffic entering I-95 northbound. The third traffic signal will be located at the I-95 southbound on- and off-ramps and Mudd Tavern Road intersection.

Work is currently estimated to be completed in summer 2019.

Message boards will be posted this week to alert motorists to the upcoming traffic shift and temporary traffic pattern.

Project Background

Construction to replace the Mudd Tavern Road overpass and improve the Exit 118 interchange began in October 2017.

The new I-95 overpass opened to traffic a year later. The new four-lane overpass, with turn lanes and wider shoulders, replaced a structurally deficient bridge with two travel lanes. All lanes on the new bridge will open when construction is complete.

The project seeks to reduce congestion, accommodate future growth and enhance safety in the Thornburg area. An offset diamond interchange design was selected to minimize the right-of-way required for the road and ramp improvements.

Additional project details are available online on the project page.
