NEW I-95 NORTHBOUND OFF-RAMP AT EXIT 118 IN THORNBURG OPENS TOMORROW
Traffic exiting I-95 northbound at Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) in Spotsylvania County will be shifted onto a new off-ramp starting Thursday, March 28
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Traffic exiting Interstate 95 northbound at Exit 118 (Thornburg) in Spotsylvania County will be shifted onto a new off-ramp starting Thursday, March 28 after the morning rush hour.
Ramp traffic exiting I-95 northbound will intersect with Mallard Road at a new traffic signal.
View an online map of the new off-ramp and temporary traffic pattern in the work zone.
Earlier this week, the new traffic signal was activated and placed into flash mode on Mallard Road to allow drivers to adjust to its presence.
The traffic signal will be placed into full color operation when traffic is shifted onto the new off-ramp tomorrow after the peak morning travel period.
Route 606 (Mudd Tavern Road) traffic will continue to use the existing on-ramp to access I-95 northbound. A new northbound on-ramp will open when the project is complete in summer 2019.
Message boards have been posted to alert motorists to the upcoming traffic shift.
Project Background
Construction on this $22.4 million project to replace the Mudd Tavern Road overpass and improve the Exit 118 interchange began in October 2017.
The project seeks to reduce congestion, accommodate future growth and enhance safety in the Thornburg area.
A new I-95 overpass opened to traffic in October 2018. The new four-lane overpass, with turn lanes and wider shoulders, replaced a structurally deficient bridge with two travel lanes. All lanes on the new overpass will open when construction is complete.
An offset diamond interchange design was selected to minimize the right-of-way required for the road and ramp improvements.
At the end of the project, three new traffic signals will be in full operation to control traffic entering and exiting I-95.
