VDOT News - Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Beginning Tuesday, Nov. 12, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close a portion of Route 643 (Haven Beach Road) in Mathews County to through traffic for approximately two weeks while crews replace drainage pipes. 

VDOT will replace two deteriorated drainage pipes located on Haven Beach Road, which is located between Fitchetts Wharf Road and Salem Church Road, in the vicinity of Milford Cemetery. 

The existing 24-inch pipes will be replaced with concrete culverts that are 34 inches high and 53 inches wide. The new culverts will improve roadway drainage in the area.   

The following routes will be posted as the designated detour around the road closure: 

• Route 644
• Route 611
• Route 14 

Additionally, motorists can use Route 642 to Route 198 to detour around the road closure. The average detour route is approximately 1.5 miles, but no more than 5 miles, depending on the destination. 

Weather permitting, work is expected to complete on Tuesday, Nov. 27. 

According to the most recent VDOT traffic data, approximately 900 vehicles a day travel on Haven Beach Road.
