VDOT News - Fredericksburg

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Roads are currently clear in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, with Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews mobilized and ready to begin plowing snow and applying sand and salt to roads as a mix of snow, freezing rain and ice moves into the region.

Motorists should plan to avoid travel during the storm, which is forecast to be underway through Wednesday evening. Roads may quickly become slick and hazardous for travel once precipitation begins.

Delaying unnecessary travel is the safest choice for motorists. It also gives VDOT crews and equipment additional space to treat road surfaces and to plow accumulated snow and slush from the travel lanes.

What Residents Should Know

• Drivers should avoid travel for the duration of the storm and remain off snow-covered or icy roads. 
• Even on bare pavement, black ice may be present. Ice may appear as a transparent glaze on the pavement and may be invisible to motorists.
• Residents are encouraged to consider that if their driveway or sidewalk is too icy for walking, road conditions may also be slippery.
• More than 530 pieces of equipment are mobilized in Fredericksburg District to treat and plow state-maintained roads across the 14-county region. Crews will begin plowing once 2 inches of snow has accumulated on the road surface.
• VDOT crews focus first on roads that carry the most traffic. Interstate 95, primary roads, and secondary roads that carry heavy traffic and connect with critical public safety and emergency services are leading priorities for snow removal. Once conditions improve on these roads, crews focus next on subdivision streets and lower-volume secondary roads.
• VDOT has coordinated with tree removal contractors to have staff available to quickly reopen roads that may be blocked by downed trees and tree limbs.
• VDOT crews will remain mobilized 24 hours a day in 12-hour shifts until all roads are safe for travel.

VDOT’s online snowplow tracker at vdotplows.org will be activated in Fredericksburg District when 2 inches of snow has accumulated.

Residents can enter their address to see the status of snow plowing in their neighborhood.
