DAY AND NIGHTTIME WORK ZONES THIS WEEK ON I-95 NEAR FREDERICKSBURG
Expect overnight delays on I-95 northbound starting tonight, Sept. 16
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Motorists should anticipate daytime and overnight work zones this week on Interstate 95 in the Fredericksburg area. Paving operations will continue this week on I-95 northbound near Exit 126 / Spotsylvania. Drivers should expect double lane and ramp closures overnight as part of this work zone starting tonight, Sept. 16.
This weekend, there will be major interstate work on I-95 northbound near Exit 133/Route 17 in Stafford County. I-95 northbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane Saturday evening into Sunday morning as crews prepare to divert I-95 northbound traffic to a new bridge over Route 17 as part of the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing Project.
I-95 motorists are strongly encouraged to choose an alternate route to avoid delays, especially through travelers with destinations outside the Fredericksburg area starting Saturday, Sept. 21, at 4 p.m. until 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 22. Read the news release.
Weather permitting, the following lane closures are scheduled:
I-95 Northbound and Southbound
South of Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) to Exit 133 (Route 17)
Expect alternating single lane closures on I-95 northbound and southbound between south of Exit 140 (Courthouse Road) at mile marker 138 to Exit 133 (Route 17) in Stafford County for multiple work zones for various construction activities for the Improve 95 projects. A work zone may be two miles to five miles long. Expect daytime and overnight lane closures. Delays are possible. Use caution with crews and construction equipment in the median and along the shoulders. Be alert to trucks slowing down to enter or exit the median at various construction entrances throughout the work zone.
Interstate 95 Northbound
- Monday – Thursday, 9:30m. – 3:30 p.m.
- Monday – Tuesday,9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.
Interstate 95 Southbound
- Monday– Thursday, 9m. – 10 a.m.
- Thursday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 6 a.m.
I-95 Northbound Major Interstate Work
Exit 133/Route 17
Saturday, Sept. 21 – Sunday, Sept. 22
- 4 p.m. – Single lane will close near Rappahannock River bridge and Exit 133/Route 17
- 5 p.m. – I-95 northbound traffic will be divided among two travel lanes. The right lane will remain open and the northbound exit and entrance ramp, also known as a collector-distributor lane, will serve as the second northbound lane.
- 8:30 p.m. Saturday – 10 a.m. Sunday ALL I-95 northbound traffic will be diverted onto the collector-distributor lane. Route 17 traffic will not be permitted to access I-95 northbound from the Exit 133 interchange during these hours. The exit ramps from I-95 northbound to Route 17 will remain open.
This work zone has been scheduled weather permitting. If the work zone is cancelled, it will be rescheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 through 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 29.

I-95 Northbound Paving
Exit 126/Spotsylvania
- Monday – Wednesday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.
Crews will continue milling and paving a section of I-95 northbound near Exit 126/Spotsylvania. Drivers can expect a single lane closure to start at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. The on- and off-ramps to Route 1 will be closed as part of the work. All lanes and ramps will reopen by 4:30 a.m. Motorists may encounter a temporary rough driving surface in the milled sections of the travel lanes. Access I-95 northbound at Exit 118/Thornburg in Spotsylvania or Exit 130/Route 3 in Fredericksburg. Message boards and detour signs will be posted.
I-95 Southbound Paving
Exit 136/Centreport Parkway
- Thursday – Friday, 9 p.m. – 4:30 a.m.
Crews will continue paving I-95 southbound between mile markers 137 – 135 near Exit 136/Centreport Parkway. One lane will be closed in the work zone at 9 p.m. followed by a double lane closure at 10 p.m. The I-95 southbound on- and off-ramps to Centreport Parkway will also be closed. Drivers should access I-95 southbound at Exit 140/Courthouse Road or Exit 133/Falmouth. All I-95 southbound lanes and ramps will reopen by 4:30 a.m.
