CULPEPER — Crews in Piedmont Virginia took advantage of an extended lull in the storm Sunday afternoon to make significant progress treating roads. Conditions may deteriorate again as additional winter weather is expected through Sunday evening especially in the northern portion of VDOT’s Culpeper District.

As of 5 p.m., road conditions vary greatly across the district. Interstate 64 in Albemarle and Louisa counties is mainly wet. I-66 in Fauquier County is reported in minor to moderate condition with patches of snow on the road.

Most primary highways range from wet to minor condition with patches of snow or slush. Primary roads in Culpeper, Fauquier and Rappahannock counties are in minor to moderate condition with snow covering the road surface in some areas. Secondary roads range from minor to moderate condition in the district.

VDOT and contract crews will continue working to make all roads passable. As conditions on the major highways allow, crews will work on neighborhood streets and low-volume rural routes.

 Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing overnight Sunday. Any moisture left on the road has the potential to refreeze into black ice. Motorists are encouraged to delay travel until mid-morning Monday. If travel is a must, drivers are reminded to use VDOT’s free 511 tools to find out about road conditions and to clear all of the snow from their vehicle — including the roof — before traveling.
