CULPEPER — Most roads across Piedmont Virginia are reported snow-covered this morning as snow continues to fall. The Virginia Department of Transportation recommends that the public postpone non-essential travel until the snow ends later today.

Interstate 64 in Albemarle and Louisa counties is mostly snow-covered at this hour, while I-66 in Fauquier County is in minor condition with patches of snow and ice on the road surface. Primary highways across the nine counties of VDOT’s Culpeper District are also in moderate condition, as are the region’s secondary roads.

Crews worked overnight as the snow continued to fall, focusing snow-removal operations first on the interstates and primary highways. As conditions on the major highway allow the crews will begin plowing secondary roads and work their way into neighborhood streets and low-volume rural routes. VDOT and contract snow-removal crews will continue working through the day Sunday to make all roads passable

Motorists are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm. Travel is hazardous during winter weather and passenger vehicles on the road can interfere with snow-clearing operations and emergency services. Those who must travel should reduce speed, increase following distance and use VDOT’s free 511 tools to find out about road conditions. Conditions vary greatly across Virginia this morning, with a mix of sleet and freezing rain across the middle of the state and rain to the southeast.
