CULPEPER — A cold rain is spreading across Central Virginia this morning and motorists may encounter freezing rain in some areas, especially in the west near the Blue Ridge Mountains and on roads at higher elevations.  The Virginia Department of Transportation is cautioning drivers to be alert for freezing conditions during the next several hours.

The possibility of freezing rain is greatest in the western counties along the Blue Ridge Mountains and on the mountain passes such as Interstate 64 and Route 250 in Albemarle County, I-66 in Fauquier, Route 33 in Greene County and routes 211 and 522 in Rappahannock County.

VDOT crews in the Culpeper District are applying salt and sand in those areas where freezing rain is likely to melt any frozen precipitation and improve traction.

Drivers planning to travel Friday morning should check road conditions using VDOT’s free 511 tools. The threat of freezing rain should lessen as temperatures rise above freezing by mid-morning.
